Chimney caps: the types, and which one your chimney takes

Chimney caps are small pieces of metal doing four jobs at once. They keep rain out of the flue, keep animals out of the house, stop burning embers landing on the roof, and help the chimney draw properly.

A cap is also the cheapest part of a chimney to replace and the most expensive one to ignore. Almost every chimney leak and almost every animal call we get traces back to a cap that was missing, rusted through, or never fitted properly.

We install and replace chimney caps across Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, Allen, McKinney, Garland, Richardson, Irving, Carrollton, Lewisville and Arlington.

What chimney caps prevent

What chimney caps prevent:

  • Water in the flue. An open flue is a drain pointing into your house. Water reaches the liner, the damper and the firebox, and rusts the metal parts from the inside
  • Animals. Birds, squirrels and raccoons nest in open flues, and it is a common call in Dallas Fort Worth. See chimney animal removal
  • Embers on the roof. The mesh on chimney caps is a spark arrestor. That is not a cosmetic feature
  • Downdraft. Correctly sized chimney caps help the chimney draw and reduce smoke pushing back into the room
  • Debris. Leaves and twigs in an open flue are both a blockage and fuel

Single flue caps sit on one exposed flue tile. The most common cap on a masonry chimney and the simplest to replace.

Multi flue caps cover two or more flues under one lid, usually on a chimney serving both a fireplace and a furnace. These are made to measure because no two crowns are the same.

Chase covers are not caps at all. They are the metal lid on a framed or prefab chimney, and when one rusts through it drops water straight into the chase. A rusted chase cover is one of the most common leak sources we find.

Outside mount caps clamp around the outside of the flue tile, used when the tile is damaged or the fit is awkward.

Custom caps are fabricated for chimneys where nothing off the shelf fits, or where the homeowner wants a particular profile.

On material, and this is the decision that matters. Galvanized steel is the cheapest and it rusts, usually within a few years in our weather. Stainless steel does not, and it is what we fit as standard. Copper is stainless-grade durable and chosen for how it looks. If someone quotes you a chimney cap without telling you the material, ask.

How we fit chimney caps

We measure, we do not guess. Flue size, crown condition and mount type decide which of the chimney caps fits. A cap that is close enough is a cap that lifts in a storm.

We inspect the crown while we are up there. Chimney caps sit on the crown, and if the crown is cracked the cap is treating a symptom. See chimney crown repair.

We fit stainless as standard and secure it properly to the flue or the crown, not resting on it.

We photograph it before and after. Chimney caps sit on your roof where you cannot see them, so you get to see them.

Inspection

We inspect your chimney on-site to determine the exact size, condition, and best solution.

Recommendation

We recommend the best chimney cap based on your home and budget.

Installation

We securely install your chimney cap for long-lasting protection.

Final Check

We verify everything is properly installed and working correctly.

I can't say enough great things about the service provided. Our original service call was for a simple Dryver vent exterior cover. While onsite my property manger and I were discussing what to do with the old wood burning stove fireplace. Eddie was able to clean update and make it look like new in the same visit! Eddie was extremely knowledgeable and helped me keep the added value of the home!

Great company! Very responsive, arrived when they said they would, and completed the work in one day. Orllin and his crew was very professional, experienced, and did a thorough cleanup after the work was done. The chimney looks great!! Working with the company’s owner was mainly through texting and worked great. I felt connected and informed throughout the process. I felt that the price was very fair and reasonable.

Ben & Wilson came ~4pm to inspect a broken chimney cap and give me a quote. The price was reasonable and they were immediately able to begin. Wilson’s a very hard worker! They completed a crown repair, installed a new cap and a swept the chimney before 6pm. Wilson was very careful and there was minimal dust in the house.

I was asking Mike to add an additional intake AC vent for my house and do a cleaning of the existing vents. With all honesty he said with less than 2 year old house no need of a duct cleaning and if anyone suggesting to do it waisting money. That was a honest suggetion that made me so happy. I dont need an extra intake vent either. Thanks Mike. God Bless

Chimney caps FAQs in Dallas Fort Worth

How much does a chimney cap cost to install?
It depends on the type and the material. A single flue stainless cap is the least expensive, a multi flue or custom cap is made to measure and costs more. The $49 inspection tells you which one your chimney takes and what it will cost, with photographs.
How do I know if my chimney cap needs replacing?
Rust streaks down the chimney, a cap that is visibly lifted or sitting crooked, missing mesh, or water and animals getting in. If you have never looked and the house is more than a few years old, assume it needs checking.
What is the difference between a chimney cap and a chase cover?
A cap sits on an exposed flue on a masonry chimney. A chase cover is the full metal lid on a framed or prefab chimney. Chase covers rust through and drop water into the chase, and they are one of the most common leak sources we find.
Should I get galvanized or stainless steel?
Stainless. Galvanized is cheaper and rusts, usually within a few years in Texas weather, which means paying twice. We fit stainless as standard.
Will a chimney cap stop animals getting in?
Yes, that is one of its main jobs. The mesh keeps birds, squirrels and raccoons out. If something is already living in there it has to come out before the cap goes on.
Can a chimney cap fix a smoky fireplace?
Sometimes. A correctly sized cap improves draw and reduces downdraft. If the fireplace has always smoked, the cause is usually sizing, height or draft and needs diagnosis rather than a cap.
My cap blew off in a storm. Is that normal?
It means it was not secured properly or it was the wrong fit. A correctly fitted cap is fastened to the flue or the crown, not resting on top of it.
Do you install caps on prefab chimneys as well as masonry?
Yes. Prefab chimneys usually need a chase cover rather than a cap, and we will tell you which yours takes.
Which cities do you cover?
Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, Allen, McKinney, Garland, Richardson, Irving, Carrollton, Lewisville and Arlington.
